When should you change your gauge?

Knowing when your gauge has been spoilt beyond repair is important. Changing the gauge at this point becomes imperative because a spoilt gauge means you do not get accurate readings of your machine and this can lead to major mishaps and lead to life threatening situations. Digital gauges and analog gauges might work on the same principle but have different ways to display information and because of this the defects can vary slightly. Here, we discuss a few tell-tale signs of a spoilt Digital Gauge:

The display could have many issues. The most common problem is that the display is not functioning correctly. This means the display only shows half the numbers. The reason for this is commonly a wire that has come loose due to vibrations or has been spoilt beyond repair due to any other reason. This is a dangerous situation because, with only half the information being visible, the operator is mis-informed and might take an action that should not have been taken.

The unit that receives the electrical signals and passes it on to the display to represent the information in the format of choice might be spoilt completely and might not send any information further to process. This is a big issue because the gauge can read the information but cannot communicate with the operator who is unable to read the gauge. This can be treated as a relatively simple problem based on a person’s knowledge of electrical circuits and can be solved by a replacement in the receiving or the sending unit - depending upon the tests to identify the problem.

With some gauges, there might be a sending unit that collects the information from the machine and processes it only to send it to the receiver and then on to the display in a format that is easily perceivable by the operator. The whole problem can arise from a point where the sending unit is not able to process information that it is supposed to. The problem might be as simple as a loose wire. These kinds of problems arise from excessive vibrations or if the gauge is being used in conditions that it was not designed to. It is a common problem with an easy fix, but it should not be treated lightly because the whole workings of the gauge depend on the crucial connections that contribute to successful processing and display of information.
